All your Post, Rails and Spindle Needs
Are you looking for that hard-to-find post and spindle railing system? You’ve found it! The railings at Heartwood Log and Lumber are made of white cedar to add that beautiful rustic look to your staircase.
We offer two options: The first is the common round rail and round spindle with a round vertical post.
This is our most traditional railing product. Our clients have used this on the inside of their home for stair railings or for lofts. The other -- and much more common -- use is on the exterior of a home as deck railings.
Another option is the square railing system. It is very similar to our round railing system, but the roundness has been squared off somewhat. This offers a look that tends to go better in timberframe houses, square-log homes, or in modern craftsman style homes.
Finishing Your Railings
On an interior application, the stain or finish used is of little importance since they won’t weather. However, as an exterior application, there are some key points to consider when doing the installation and when staining/finishing the wood:
Install weep holes in the well where the spindle sits on the bottom rail.
Use one of our high quality penetrating oil stains -- not a film-forming stain.
Consider installing Cobra Rods anywhere that carries a high likelihood of rot.
Once you’ve treated your exterior deck with one of our high quality penetrating oil log home stains, you will need to wash and re-coat the deck every 2-4 years. Make sure to use the same product each time you service the deck and rails.
